Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of seven emirates. The land surface of the country stretches over 67,340 kilometres taking up almost 80% of the UAE’s total land area. Only 30% of Abu Dhabi is inhabited, with the rest covered by desert. Over the past decade the country has undergone a land cultivation programme to increase the number of green areas, which has included introducing parks and roadside plantations. A sizeable 1.2% of the country is now used for agriculture.
The city of Abu Dhabi is situated on an island 250 metres from the mainland which is connected by the Maqta and Mussafah bridges. In just over half a century the city has been transformed into a major investment and tourism centre with a population of 1.45 million in 2008. Currently Abu Dhabi provides 15% of UAE’s GDP.
The economy of Abu Dhabi relies on its lustrous natural resources including oil and natural gases. These resources make the country one of the richest in the world and, as a result, provide high per capita income to residents. Although natural resources make up the biggest proportion of GDP output, tourism and property are gaining momentum as valuable income for the country.
Arabic is the official language of Abu Dhabi, although English is widely spoken from the board rooms of large companies to restaurants. As a general rule, the further you venture out from the city centre, the less English is understood, but it is common to find road signs and menus in both Arabic and English.
Islam is the official religion in Abu Dhabi, but other religions are accepted within the city as long as overt views are not displayed. It is worth remembering that the holy day for Muslims is Friday and not Sunday as it is in the West.
Abu Dhabi is becoming increasingly popular with expats who are attracted by tax free salaries and great weather, but do not necessarily wish to live in the brashness of Dubai. Throughout 2009 the emirate showed its financial stability and is therefore attracting more expats and international investors than ever before.
