Russia is by far the largest country in the world based on the sheer size of the nation which borders 14 countries, including some states that were part of the soviet before it dissolved in 1991. Russia is the 9th most populous country in the world with 142 million inhabitants. Because Russia is such a vast country it covers the whole of Northern Asia and 40% of Europe, it also covers 11 time zones.
The country has a diverse environment from forests to mountains and has the world's largest reserves of minerals and natural energy resources. The lakes in Russia contain almost one quarter of the world's unfrozen water. The climate in Russia really only has two seasons - winter and summer - spring and autumn are just brief periods of climate change within the country. In winter the whole of the country is plunged in to extreme coldness with temperatures rarely above freezing, in contrast the summer months can be hot and humid, even in Siberia.
Russia has the world's largest natural gas reserves, second largest coal reserves and the eighth biggest oil reserves. Oil, natural gases, metals and timber account for more than 80% of Russian exports. The country also prides itself of the long tradition of education, science and industry, as a result, the country has more university graduates than any other country in Europe.
Moscow is Russia's capital city and the largest metropolitan area in Europe. The city is the political, economic, financial and educational centre in Russia and is the seventh largest city in the world with a population of over 10 million. As Moscow is a big economic and financial centre it has the largest number of billionaires in the world and has been named the third most expensive city for expats to live in after Tokyo and Osaka. Wealthy expats can enjoy a life of luxury in Moscow as it is a city of indulgence.
The city has one of the largest city economies in Europe as it comprises almost 20% of total Russian GDP which currently stands at 6.73 trillion roubles or $263 billion.
