Mexico is the 11th most populous country in the world with a population of an estimated 109 million people. It covers almost 2 million square kilometres connecting North and South America and reaching the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The country is described as an emerging power and economists have predicted that by 2050 Mexico will have the fifth largest economy in the world.
The country's economy relies heavily on imports and exports with nearly 50% of all exports ending up in America and Canada. Oil remains Mexcio's biggest income and due to the emerging status that the country had been given the government has laid down plans to improve the country's infrastructure in roads, ports, railways and telecommunication. The government is also aiming to reform tax laws and help decrease the gap between the rich and the poor.
Tourism is an important part of the economy in Mexico as it is the seventh most popular tourist destination in the world with visitors attracted to Mayan and Aztec ruins and perfectly preserved beaches.
Although there is no official language in Mexico, Spanish is spoken by 97% of the population, 7.1% of the population also speak an indigenous language. English is widely spoken at the US borders and in the popular coastal cities. The Caribbean coast is the most popular place for expats to set up home.
There is no officially recognised religion in Mexico although it is estimated that 95% of the population follows the Christian faith and from this 89% are Catholic, making Mexico the largest Catholic country after Brazil.
The country's capital is Mexico City which is one of the world's largest cities in both size and population. There are currently nearly 9 million inhabitants within the city, with a further 19 million in Greater Mexico City. The capital is Mexico's economic, industrial and cultural centre. The city alone has a higher GDP than that of the whole of South Korea, making it the eighth highest GDP area behind Tokyo and New York.
