Dubai: Country Expat Overview |
|

Dubai is the second largest emirate behind Abu Dhabi in the UAE and is the most populous. Although Dubai and Abu Dhabi share the same federal framework as the rest of the emirates, they have the power to veto any matters of national importance that could affect the country's legislature.
The emirate is situated on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Persian Gulf'. Dubai is one of the most multicultural cities in the world with most of the population being from the expat community and only 10% being national Emiratis.
Dubai's population has risen 10 fold in the past 35 years with an estimated 1.5 million people currently living in the city. This rise is due to the transformation of the city into a business and technological centre, which is believed to have been masterminded by Dubai's current ruler Sheikh Mohammed, who also introduced the Emirates Airline. A sizeable proportion of the population are expats, making Dubai one of the most diverse cities in the Middle East.
The skyline in Dubai is characterised by modern construction which mainly houses commercial investment. The city is also home to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai, which stands at 818 metres. In fact construction and property are the biggest industries in Dubai along with tourism which make up nearly 23% of the country's economy. This is in comparison to oil and natural gases which now only make up 6% of the economy as they are deemed to be running out.
The official language in Dubai is Arabic, although English is most commonly used. The country is Islamic with mosques around the city, although other places of worship are allowed.
