Retail figures in the UK rebounded in June, boosted by a heat wave, the World Cup and early summer discounts, according to a survey.
The British Retail Consortium said sales last month were 1.2% higher than a year ago and up from 0.8% in May and the best showing since March. Total sales rose 3.4% on the year, up from 3% in May and also the best figures since March.
Robust sales of barbecue foods, salads and TV dinners fuelled a 1.2% rise in turnover, while garden equipment sold well, offsetting falls in DIY and homeware products. In addition, it has been reported that the World Cup fuelled demand in new TV sets.
The BRC said the results were encouraging, particularly given the comparison with a strong performance in June last year.
