Fine Art Funds are investment vehicles that allow individual investors access to an asset class that they would not ordinarily have the opportunity to invest in. Primarily an investment of passion, fine art is a market that requires high expertise to reap the benefits. Those that without the necessary skills may participate by buying into the fund and relying on the judgement of the fund’s investment committee.
There is a long history of individuals and retailers actively trading old master paintings, classical sculptures, ceramics, coins, drawings, antique furniture and other upmarket collectibles. Traditionally, however, there has been little interest in operation of a commercial fund that invested in art works rather than in shares, bonds or real estate and that provided superior financial rewards for investors by trading those works.
Fine Art funds remain a curiosity to most but will always attract the attention of sophisticated investors looking for added diversification
